College Basketball Viewing Guide for Friday, March 5, 2021

While most of your attention (and this post’s) will go toward conference tournaments, there are still some important regular season games on the Friday slate.

NCAA Basketball: Duke at Georgia Tech
Jose Alvarado and Georgia Tech took down Duke in OT on Tuesday, but the Yellow Jackets hit the road tonight.

With several conference tournaments in action today, at least when compared to games with at-large impact, I’m skipping the table for regular-season contests today. There are several finales I won’t cover here (particularly in the MAAC and MAC), but you can find those on MattSarzSports.com’s daily schedule.

All NET rankings are from the NCAA’s website and reflect games played against D1 opposition only through Thursday, March 4, 2021. Records reflect all games played through the same date.

Games are presented in relative order of importance. All times are Eastern. All times and broadcast information are CoVID-dependent.

Quad 2 For Host/Quad 1 For Visitor (2/1: 6 Games)

31–75 at Top 75

96. UAB (19-6, 11-5 C-USA) at 59. North Texas (13-7, 9-3), 8 p.m. (ESPN+ ($))

Louisiana Tech (20-6, 12-4) needs the Blazers to sweep their trip to Denton to pass the Mean Green in the C-USA standings.

Quad 2 For Both Teams (2/2: 3 Games)

31–75 at 76–135

41. Colorado State (17-4, 14-3 MW) at 105. Nevada (14-9, 9-7), 7 p.m. (CBSSN)

A win would put the Rams a half-game up over San Diego State in the race for the No. 1 seed in Vegas next week.

Quad 2 For Host/Quad 3 For Visitor (2/3: 2 Games)

31–75 at 136–240

38. Georgia Tech (14-8, 10-6 ACC) at 180. Wake Forest (6-14, 3-14), 8 p.m. (ACCN)

Since the Demon Deacons have lost six in a row, the Yellow Jackets cannot be the team to end the streak, not after their good work over the past couple of weeks.

Quad 3 For Host/Quad 2 For Visitor (3/2: 3 Games)

76–160 at 76–135

143. Old Dominion (14-6, 10-4 C-USA) at 79. Western Kentucky (17-5, 10-2), 8 p.m. (CBS Sports on Facebook Watch)

The Hilltoppers have won eight straight conference games since splitting with Louisiana Tech, so they’re in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 seed for the C-USA Tournament.

Quad 4 For Host/Quad 1 For Visitor (4/1: 2 Games)

161–353 at Top 75

164. Ball State (10-11, 8-8 MAC) at 62. Toledo (19-7, 14-4), 7 p.m. (CBSSN)

The Rockets dropped their last game, at Central Michigan on Tuesday night, so they’ll want to get back on track before heading to Cleveland on Thursday. Of course, Toledo lost at Bll State by an 81-67 score on February 6th.

ASUN Semifinals

ESPN+ ($) will stream both games.

Game 5: No. 7 Stetson (11-13, 7-9) vs. No. 1 Liberty (21-5, 11-2), 2 p.m.
The pair split their season series (at Stetson).
Game 6: No. 6 FGCU (10-7, 4-5) vs. No. 5 North Alabama (12-10, 7-8), 7 p.m.
The Eagles won the season series 2-0 (at home).

A crazy afternoon and evening in Jacksonville saw the two, three, and four seeds eliminated (including co-host North Florida), leaving the door wide open for Liberty to earn the bid. Remember that fifth-seeded North Alabama is ineligible for the postseason due to its transition into Division I. If the Flames fail to cut down the nets on Sunday, look for this conference’s winner to end up in the First Four.

OVC Semifinals

ESPNU will air both games.

Game 5: No. 4 Jacksonville State (18-8, 13-6) vs. No. 1 Belmont (25-3, 18-2), 8 p.m.
The Bruins won the season series 2-0 (home-and-home).
Game 6: No. 3 Eastern Kentucky (22-6, 15-5) vs. No. 2 Morehead State (21-7, 17-3), approx. 10:30 p.m.
The season series was a home split.

On Thursday, the two OVC members headed to the ASUN next season took care of business in their quarterfinals, though the Gamecocks needed OT to eliminate Murray State. Tonight, they face a pair of holdovers who will be looking to send their rivals to their new conference with frowns on their faces. Belmont is heavily favored here, particularly if Nick Muszynski returns to the Bruin frontcourt.

Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals

NBCSN will air all four games.

Game 7: No. 9 Duquesne (9-8, 7-7) vs. No. 1 St. Bonaventure (13-4, 11-4) (at Siegel Center), 11 a.m.
The Bonnies won both meetings (home-and-home).
Game 8: No. 5 UMass (8-6, 6-4) vs. No. 4 Saint Louis (13-5, 6-4) (at Robins Center), 1 p.m.
The Billikens won the pair’s lone meeting (at home).
Game 9: No. 7 Dayton (14-8, 9-7) at No. 2 VCU (17-6, 10-4), 3:30 p.m.
The Rams won both meetings (home-and-home).
Game 10: No. 6 George Mason (13-8, 8-6) vs. No. 3 Davidson (12-7, 7-4) (at Robins Center), approx. 5:30 p.m.
The pair have not met.

In my forthcoming bracket for today, there will be three Atlantic 10 teams. Each will be in action today. Can SBU, SLU, and VCU each reach tomorrow’s semifinals? The Rams get the bonus of playing a true home game.

MVC Quarterfinals

MVC TV (FS Midwest and NBCS Chicago (Games 3 and 4) and NBCS Chicago Plus (Games 5 and 6) will air and ESPN+ ($) will stream all four games.

Game 3: No. 9 Southern Illinois (12-13, 5-13) vs. No. 1 Loyola Chicago (21-4, 16-2), 12 p.m.
The Ramblers won both meetings (at home).
Game 4: No. 5 Evansville (9-15, 7-11) vs. No. 4 Indiana State (14-9, 11-7), 3 p.m.
The Sycamores won both meetings (home-and-home).
Game 5: No. 7 Northern Iowa (10-15, 7-11) vs. No. 2 Drake (24-3, 15-3), 6 p.m.
The Sycamores won both meetings (home-and-home).
Game 6: No. 6 Valparaiso (10-17, 7-11) vs. No. 3 Missouri State (16-6, 12-6), 9 p.m.
The Bears won both meetings (on the road).

Bradley lost to UNI on Thursday night, meaning the Braves will not win Arch Madness for a third straight year. That has to come as a relief to Drake, who fell to them in Peoria on Saturday night. Still, both the Bulldogs and top-seeded Loyola will want to take care of business today and tomorrow to maximize their chances of reaching the field.

WCC Second Round

Stadium will air and stream both games.

Game 3: No. 8 San Francisco (11-13, 4-9) vs. No. 5 Loyola Marymount (12-8, 7-5), 9 p.m.
The Lions won both meetings (home-and-home).
Game 4: No. 7 Santa Clara (11-7, 4-5) vs. No. 6 Pacific (9-8, 6-7), 12 a.m. 03/06
The Tigers won the pair’s lone meeting (at home).

The Dons took out San Diego and Broncos eliminated Portland on Thursday night. Saint Mary’s and Pepperdine (yes, the Gaels are the fourth seed) await tonight’s victors tomorrow.

SoCon First Round

ESPN+ ($) will stream both games.

Game 1: No. 9 Western Carolina (11-15, 4-13) vs. No. 8 The Citadel (12-11, 5-11), 5:30 p.m.
The season series was a home split.
Game 2: No. 10 Samford (6-12, 2-9) vs. No. 7 Mercer (15-10, 8-9), approx. 8 p.m.
The Bears won both meetings (home-and-home).

Tonight’s winners move on to Saturday’s quarterfinals, where top-seeded UNCG and second-seeded Wofford await.

Sun Belt First Round

ESPN+ ($) will stream all four games.

Game 1: East No. 5 Georgia Southern (13-12, 7-9) vs. West No. 4 Arkansas State (10-12, 7-8) (Hartsell Arena), 6 p.m.
Game 2: West No. 6 ULM (7-18, 5-13) vs. East No. 3 South Alabama (16-10, 10-7) (Pensacola Bay Center), 6:30 p.m.
Game 3: East No. 6 Troy (10-16, 4-12) vs. West No. 3 UT Arlington (13-12, 9-8) (Pensacola Bay Center), approx. 9 p.m.
Game 4: West No. 5 Little Rock (11-14, 7-11) vs. East No. 4 Appalachian State (13-11, 7-8) (Hartsell Arena), approx. 8:30 p.m.

The Sun Belt moved its tournament up this season and switched the location to a pair of arenas in Pensacola, Florida. Due to CoVID, the conference also decided to switch its scheduling format to a regional one with East and West Divisions. As a result, these are all new matchups for this season. We might see a few rematches when the top two seeds from each division enter the fray tomorrow evening.
