College Basketball Viewing Guide for Wednesday, March 3, 2021

The first Wednesday schedule for March isn’t as loaded as the first Tuesday’s, but there are still plenty of intriguing matchups and more early conference tournament contests available to partake in.

Quad 1 For Both Teams (1/1: 1 Game)

Top 30 at Top 75

23. Creighton (17-6, 13-5 Big East) at 11. Villanova (15-4, 10-3), 8:30 p.m. (FS1)

Back on February 13th, the Bluejays handled the Wildcats in Omaha, winning by 16. Both teams are coming off surprising weekend losses—Creighton to Xavier and Nova to Butler. So, a win tonight would do wonders for the seeding of the team able to earn it.

Quad 2 For Host/Quad 1 For Visitor (2/1: 6 Games)

31–75 at Top 75

33. Clemson (15-5, 9-5 ACC) at 55. Syracuse (14-8, 8-7), 5 p.m. (ACCN)
34. UConn (12-6, 9-6 Big East) at 52. Seton Hall (13-10, 10-7), 6:30 p.m. (FS1)
46. Missouri (14-7, 7-7 SEC) at 26. Florida (13-6, 9-5), 6:30 p.m. (SECN)
69. Minnesota (13-12, 6-12 Big Ten) at 51. Penn State (8-13, 5-12), 7 p.m. (B1G Network)
37. UCLA (17-6, 13-4 Pac-12) at 35. Oregon (17-5, 12-4), 9 p.m. (ESPN2)
61. Stanford (14-11, 10-9 Pac-12) at 24. USC (19-6, 13-5), 10:30 p.m. (FS1)

Syracuse, Minnesota, and Stanford are all on the wrong side of the cut line, and while winning tonight would be a boost to each, it’s the Cardinal who are best in position to enter Friday’s projection with one. Their opposition, USC, however, has a conference title to play for, but three losses in the Trojans’ last four games has them chasing UCLA and Oregon, who meet tonight in Eugene. While USC won at Stanford earlier this season, the Bruins and Ducks are meeting for the first time, since their meeting at Pauley was canceled due to CoVID issues. In the SEC, Florida and Missouri meet in Gainesville, with the victor likely to gain a seeding edge.

Quad 1 For Host/Quad 2 For Visitor (1/2: 1 Game)

Top 30 at 76–135

28. Maryland (15-10, 9-9 Big Ten) at 91. Northwestern (7-14, 4-13), 9 p.m. (B1G Network)

The Terps have climbed closer to lock status, but must be wary of the Wildcats, who won at Minnesota in their last game.

Quad 1 For Host/Quad 3 For Visitor (1/3: 1 Game)

Top 30 at 136–240

17. San Diego State (19-4, 13-3 MW) at 177. UNLV (11-12, 8-8), 9 p.m. (CBSSN)

The top seed in the Mountain West Tournament is on the line for the Aztecs, as they visit that event’s host, UNLV. SDSU has won 10 straight since being swept by Utah State.

Quad 3 For Host/Quad 1 For Visitor (3/1: 2 Games)

76–160 at Top 75

79. Providence (12-11, 8-9 Big East) at 74. St. John’s (14-10, 8-9), 7 p.m. (CBSSN)
155. Boston College (4-13, 2-9 ACC) at 16. Florida State (14-4, 10-3), 9 p.m. (ACCN)

With both Duke and Xavier losing on Tuesday, the Red Storm are very much alive in the at-large race, provided they complete a season sweep of the Friars. As for the Seminoles, a win would put them within striking distance of claiming the ACC Tournament’s No. 1 seed for a second straight season.

Quad 2 For Host/Quad 3 For Visitor (2/3: 1 Game)

31–75 at 136–240

66. Wichita State (13-4, 9-2 American) at 163. Tulane (9-11, 4-11), 6 p.m. (ESPN+ ($))

The American Athletic-leading Shockers defeated the Green Wave by just eight at home three weeks ago.

Quad 3 For Host/Quad 2 For Visitor (3/2: 1 Game)

76–160 at 76–135

76. NC State (12-9, 8-8 ACC) at 82. Notre Dame (9-13, 6-10), 7 p.m. (ACCN)

Like St. John’s and Minnesota, the Wolfpack have some at-large life thanks to the poor performance of others. That isn’t likely to be the case if they fall to an Irish squad that’s dropped three in a row.

Quad 4 For Host/Quad 1 For Visitor (4/1: 1 Game)

161–353 at Top 75

303. New Mexico (6-14, 2-14 MW) at 39. Colorado State (16-4, 13-3), 8 p.m. (MWN)

Not only are the Rams playing for at least a share of the Mountain West title, they’re playing for an at-large. They don’t want to follow in Boise State’s footsteps of dropping a must-win home contest.

Quad 2 For Host/Quad 4 For Visitor (2/4: 1 Game)

31–75 at 241–353

87. Abilene Christian (19-4, 11-2 Southland) at 158. Stephen F. Austin (15-4, 11-2), 6 p.m. (ESPN+ ($))

Quad 4 For Host/Quad 3 For Visitor (4/3: 2 Games)

161–353 at 136–240

218. Merrimack (9-8, 9-8 NEC) at 157. Wagner (12-6, 12-5), 4 p.m. (NEC Front Row)
340. Texas A&M Corpus Christi (4-18, 1-12 Southland) at 153. Sam Houston State (18-7, 12-2), 7:30 p.m. (ESPN+ ($))

Quad 4 For Host/Quad 4 For Visitor (4/4: 1 Game)

161–353 at 241–353

183. Nicholls State (16-6, 13-2 Southland) at 331. McNeese State (10-11, 4-8), 7:30 p.m. (McNeese stream)

In the Southland, Nicholls State holds the auto bid in Tuesday’s bracket, but the Colonels are also playing their final scheduled conference game tonight. With the Southland tournament’s stepladder format, there’s much to play for between Nicholls and the three other two-loss teams in the conference standings. Two of those, favorites SFA and ACU, meet tonight.

Wagner and Merrimack meet in the final NEC game of the regular season, with the Seahawks locked into the No. 2 seed behind Bryant

OVC Quarterfinals (Night One)

ESPN+ ($) will stream both games.

Game 1: No. 8 SIU Edwardsville (9-16, 7-12) vs. No. 1 Belmont (24-3, 18-2), 8 p.m.
The Bruins swept a home-and-home series.
Game 2: No. 7 Southeast Missouri State (11-15, 9-11) vs. No. 2 Morehead State (20-7, 17-3), approx. 10:30 p.m.
The Eagles swept a home-and-home series.

The OVC previously employed a stepladder bracket, which would have given Belmont and Morehead State byes until Friday’s semifinals. This year, both will participate in the first of two quarterfinal doubleheaders, with the 4 vs. 5 and 3 vs. 6 games scheduled for Thursday night in Evansville.

Atlantic 10 First Round

ESPN+ ($) will stream both games.

Game 1: No. 13 Saint Joseph’s (4-14, 3-9) vs. No. 12 La Salle (9-15, 6-11), 11 a.m.
The season series was a home split.
Game 2: No. 14 Fordham (2-11, 2-11) vs. No. 11 George Washington (4-11, 3-5), 2 p.m.
The Colonials won at Fordham in the teams’ lone meeting.

The Atlantic 10 moved the majority of its tournament up to this week, while the final is still scheduled for Selection Sunday. The venue also changed, with Richmond and VCU hosting the first four rounds and Dayton taking the title game.

Patriot League First Round

Game 1: No. 10 Lehigh (4-10) at No. 7 Boston University (6-10), 7 p.m. (ESPN+ ($))
The pair did not meet.

Two games were originally scheduled for tonight, but Holy Cross had to withdraw due to CoVID protocols. So, ninth-seeded Loyola Maryland advances to Saturday’s quarterfinal at Navy. Remember that the Patriot League’s schedule was heavily regionalized this season, so the Mountain Hawks and Terriers are seeing themselves for the first time tonight.
