NET Viewing Guide For Friday, February 1 Through Sunday, February 3, 2019

There’s some big football game on Sunday that will limit the day’s schedule. For shame. For a more traditional look at the schedule, visit MattSarzSports.com.

NCAA Basketball: Louisville at North Carolina Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

At the bottom of the page, you’ll find a lineup broken down by telecast window with the group designations in bold to the left of the game. Instead of ordering these by tip time, however, I’ve grouped them by importance.

Reminders of the different groupings:

  • Group 1 (home games): Visitor is ranked 1-30
  • Group 1 (away games): Host is ranked 1-75
  • Group 2 (home games): Visitor is ranked 31-75
  • Group 2 (away games): Host is ranked 76-135
  • Group 3 (home games): Visitor is ranked 76-160
  • Group 3 (away games): Host is ranked 136-240
  • Group 4 (home games): Visitor is ranked 161-353
  • Group 4 (away games): Host is ranked 241-353

All NET numbers are from the NCAA’s website and reflect games played through Wednesday, January 30. Records reflect games played through Thursday, January 31. All times are Eastern.

Group 1 for both the host and visitor

Friday, February 1

No. 4 Michigan Wolverines (20-1, 9-1) at No. 27 Iowa Hawkeyes (16-5, 5-5), 7 p.m. (FS1)
No. 22 Maryland Terrapins (17-5, 8-3) at No. 13 Wisconsin Badgers (15-6, 7-3), 9 p.m. (FS1)

The Big Ten clearly doesn’t want to go back to the days when power conference college basketball was a rarity on Friday nights. The conference is bringing the heat with a pair of Group 1 tilts, including Maryland’s attempt to sweep Wisconsin. Iowa and Michigan have yet to meet—this will in fact be their only regular-season matchup.

Saturday, February 2

No. 10 Virginia Tech Hokies (17-3, 6-2) at No. 25 N.C. State Wolfpack (16-5, 4-4), 12 p.m. (Raycom/TheACC.com/ESPN3)
No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels (16-4, 6-1) at No. 12 Louisville Cardinals (16-5, 7-1), 2 p.m. (ESPN)
No. 26 Mississippi State Bulldogs (15-5, 3-4) at No. 37 Mississippi Rebels (14-6, 4-3), 3:30 p.m. (SECN)
No. 15 Texas Tech Red Raiders (17-4, 5-3) at No. 20 Kansas Jayhawks (16-5, 5-3), 4 p.m. (CBS)
No. 7 Kentucky Wildcats (17-3, 6-1) at No. 39 Florida Gators (12-8, 4-3), 4 p.m. (ESPN)
No. 30 TCU Horned Frogs (15-5, 3-4) at No. 34 Baylor Bears (14-6, 5-2), 8 p.m. (ESPNU)

There are a whopping six all-Group-1 showdowns on Saturday, with three in the late afternoon Eastern window. However, the game of the day will tip off before that, as Louisville will attempt to repeat its stunning 83-62 victory over UNC in Chapel Hill—at the KFC Yum! Center this time.

Interestingly, the loser of the Texas Tech-Kansas game might find itself two games out in the loss column in the Big 12 race when all is said and done on Saturday.

31-75 at Top 75

Group 1 for the visitor only; Group 2 for the host

Saturday, February 2

No. 44 St. John’s Red Storm (16-5) at No. 3 Duke Blue Devils (18-2), 12 p.m. (ESPN)
No. 63 Seton Hall Pirates (13-8, 4-5) at No. 55 Butler Bulldogs (12-10, 3-6), 12 p.m. (FS1)
No. 41 Texas Longhorns (12-9, 4-4) at No. 14 Iowa State Cyclones (16-5, 5-3), 2 p.m. (ESPN2)
No. 46 San Francisco Dons (17-4, 5-2) at No. 52 Saint Mary’s Gaels (13-9, 4-3), 4 p.m. (Spectrum Sportsnet/NBCS California/Root Sports/TheW.tv)
No. 48 Indiana Hoosiers (12-9, 3-7) at No. 6 Michigan State Spartans (18-3, 9-1), 6 p.m. (ESPN)
No. 45 Syracuse Orange (15-6, 6-2) at No. 71 Pittsburgh Panthers (12-9, 2-6), 6 p.m. (ESPN2)
No. 35 Kansas State Wildcats (15-5, 5-2) at No. 70 Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-11, 2-5), 6 p.m. (ESPNU)
No. 65 Arkansas Razorbacks (12-8, 3-4) at No. 16 LSU Tigers (17-3, 7-0), 6 p.m. (SECN)
No. 43 Alabama Crimson Tide (13-7, 4-3) at No. 24 Auburn Tigers (14-6, 3-4), 8 p.m. (ESPN2)

There are opportunities lurking for the visitors on this list, particularly squads like St. John’s, Texas, Indiana, Arkansas, and Alabama who are all visiting teams ranked well ahead of them in the NET. The Hoosiers, losers of seven straight, and Crimson Tide, difficult to beat in Tuscaloosa but in need of a quality road win, are particularly in need of big wins.

Sunday, February 3

No. 87 Georgetown Hoyas (14-7, 4-4) at No. 21 Villanova Wildcats (17-4, 8-0), 12 p.m. (FS1)
No. 50 Minnesota Golden Gophers (16-5, 6-4) at No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers (15-6, 8-2), 12 p.m. (BTN)

On Sunday, Minnesota can shore up its case by winning at Purdue, who didn’t look all that great in an overtime win at Penn State on Thursday. Georgetown, meanwhile, can really put itself in the at-large hunt by handing Nova its first Big East loss.

Top 30 at 76-135

Group 1 for the host only; Group 2 for the visitor

Friday, February 1

No. 19 Buffalo Bulls (19-2, 7-1) at No. 129 Bowling Green Falcons (14-6, 6-1), 8 p.m. (CBSSN)

“Friday Night with the Bulls” is turning into a 2019 college basketball tradition. Only Marquette has defeated Buffalo in a Friday night contest this season.

Saturday, February 2

No. 28 Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-8, 3-7) at No. 116 Illinois Fighting Illini (6-15, 2-8), 2:15 p.m. (BTN)
No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers (19-1, 7-0) at No. 105 Texas A&M Aggies (8-11, 1-6), 8 p.m. (ESPN2)

With Nebraska’s NET seriously inflated at this point, these two matchups no longer resemble each other in expected outcome.

31-75 at 76-135

Group 2 for both the host and the visitor

Saturday, February 2

No. 32 Oklahoma Sooners (15-6, 3-5) at No. 104 West Virginia Mountaineers (9-12, 1-7), 12 p.m. (ESPN2)
No. 59 Memphis Tigers (13-8, 5-3) at No. 80 South Florida Bulls (14-6, 4-4), 12 p.m. (ESPNU)
No. 72 Providence Friars (13-8, 3-5) at No. 112 DePaul Blue Demons (11-9, 3-6), 2:30 p.m. (FS1)
No. 47 Hofstra Pride (19-3, 9-0) at No. 107 Northeastern Huskies (12-9, 6-3), 4:30 p.m. (NESN Plus/MSG/CAA.tv)
No. 64 Oregon Ducks (13-8, 4-4) at No. 106 Colorado Buffaloes (11-9, 2-6), 9:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks)

The most interesting matchup of these five is Hofstra’s trip to Boston, as the Pride will put their 16-game winning streak, America’s longest, on the line. But even if Joe Mihalich’s squad falls, it will still lead the CAA, as Hofstra is three full games up on Northeastern in the standings.

31-75 at 136-240

Group 2 for the host only; Group 3 for the visitor

Friday, February 1

No. 69 Yale Bulldogs (12-3, 2-0) at No. 153 Harvard Crimson (8-7, 1-1), 7 p.m. (ESPNU)
No. 67 Davidson Wildcats (15-5, 6-1) at No. 161 St. Bonaventure Bonnies (8-12, 4-3), 7 p.m. (ESPN2)

A potential Ivy League Tournament preview paired with a possible trap game for Davidson. Note that the Wildcats are a half-game behind George Mason in the Atlantic 10 race heading into the weekend.

76-160 at Top 75

Group 1 for the visitor only; Group 3 for the host

Saturday, February 2

No. 110 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (11-9, 4-6) at No. 38 Ohio State Buckeyes (13-7, 3-6), 12 p.m. (BTN)
No. 95 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (11-10, 3-5) at No. 33 Florida State Seminoles (15-5, 3-4), 12 p.m. (ACC RSNs/ESPN3)
No. 113 Miami Hurricanes (9-11, 1-7) at No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (19-1, 7-1), 2 p.m.(Raycom/TheACC.com/ESPN3)
No. 89 UCLA Bruins (12-9, 5-3) at No. 29 Washington Huskies (17-4, 8-0), 4 p.m. (ESPN2)
No. 157 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels (11-9, 5-3) at No. 40 Utah State Aggies (16-5, 6-2), 4:30 p.m. (AT&T SN Rocky Mtn. and SW/MWN)
No. 127 George Mason Patriots (13-8, 7-1) at No. 53 VCU Rams (14-6, 5-2), 6:30 p.m. (NBCSN)
No. 143 Boise State Broncos (10-11, 5-3) at No. 17 Nevada Wolf Pack (20-1, 7-1), 6 p.m. (CBSSN)
No. 119 SMU Mustangs (12-8, 4-4) at No. 23 Cincinnati Bearcats (18-3, 7-1), 8 p.m. (CBSSN)
No. 96 San Diego Toreros (15-7, 4-3) at No. 2 Gonzaga Bulldogs (20-2, 7-0), 8 p.m. (KHQ 6/NBCS Bay Area Plus/Root Sports/AT&T SN SW/TheW.tv)

Speaking of potential trap games, Saturday will feature these nine. Most intriguingly, Rutgers will attempt to sweep Ohio State, while VCU hosts George Mason aiming to knock the Patriots off the conference lead. (VCU-Mason is also a timely matchup for Super Bowl weekend in 2019.)

Sunday, February 3

No. 86 Xavier Musketeers (11-11, 3-6) at No. 62 Creighton Bluejays (12-9, 3-5), 1 p.m. (FSN)

The Bluejays need to hold off the Musketeers for their fading at-large hopes.

76-160 at 76-135

Group 2 for the visitor only; Group 3 for the host

Saturday, February 2

No. 118 South Carolina Gamecocks (10-10, 5-2) at No. 91 Georgia Bulldogs (10-10, 1-6), 1 p.m. (SECN)
No. 98 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-10, 1-7) at No. 121 Boston College Eagles (11-8, 2-5), 2 p.m. (ACC RSNs/ESPN3)
No. 159 Duquesne Dukes (15-6, 6-2) at No. 93 Dayton Flyers (14-7, 6-2), 2 p.m. (FS Ohio/ESPN+)
No. 109 Saint Louis Billikens (14-7, 5-3) at No. 125 Rhode Island Rams (11-9, 4-4), 4 p.m. (CBSSN)
No. 81 Oregon State Beavers (13-7, 5-3) at No. 85 Utah Utes (11-9, 5-3), 5 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks)
No. 135 Austin Peay Governors (15-7, 7-2) at No. 134 Jacksonville State Gamecocks (16-6, 8-1), 5 p.m. (ESPN+)
No. 114 Vanderbilt Commodores (9-11, 0-7) at No. 92 Missouri Tigers (10-9, 1-6), 8:30 p.m. (SECN)

The most interesting matchup out of this group of games largely featuring teams with slim at-large hopes is the OVC matchup. Jacksonville State already took control of the league race by defeating Murray State on Thursday, but they can pick up another win over a close challenger by topping resurgent Austin Peay.

76-160 at 136-240

Group 3 for both the host and the visitor

Friday, February 1

No. 83 Penn Quakers (12-6, 0-2) at No. 237 Cornell Big Red (9-9, 1-1), 5 p.m. (ESPNU)

The defending Ivy champs head to Ithaca looking for their first league win of 2019.

Saturday, February 2

No. 123 Radford Highlanders (15-7, 7-1) at No. 155 Winthrop Eagles (14-7, 6-2), 2 p.m. (ESPN+)
No. 79 USC Trojans (12-9, 5-3) at No. 225 Washington State Cougars (8-13, 1-7), 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks)
No. 82 Grand Canyon Antelopes (13-7, 6-1) at No. 169 Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (15-6, 6-1), 10 p.m. (ESPN3)

First-place clashes in the Big South and WAC hold far more interest than USC’s trip to the Palouse.

161-353 at Top 75

Group 1 for the visitor only; Group 4 for the host

Sunday, February 3

No. 193 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (8-12, 1-7) at No. 54 Clemson Tigers (12-8, 2-5), 12 p.m. (ESPNU)

Clemson defeated Pitt on Tuesday, a good start for a stretch of three highly-winnable games.

31-75 at 241-353

Group 2 for the host only; Group 4 for the visitor

Saturday, February 2

No. 58 Temple Owls (15-6, 5-3) at No. 303 Tulane Green Wave (4-16, 0-8), 6 p.m. (ESPN3)
No. 49 Murray State Racers (16-4, 7-2) at No. 333 Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (7-15, 3-6), 8:30 p.m. (ESPN+)

Temple cannot let Houston defeat them twice as they head to New Orleans. The same goes for Murray State, which needs to win and hope Jacksonville State slips up a couple of times to have a chance at the OVC regular-season crown.

161-353 at 76-135

Group 2 for the visitor only; Group 4 for the host

Saturday, February 2

No. 184 New Mexico Lobos (9-11, 3-5) at No .77 Fresno State Bulldogs (15-5, 6-2), 10 p.m. (ESPNU)

The Bulldogs’ slim at-large hopes would take another hit with a home loss to the Lobos.
