Islands Of The Bahamas Showcase

FloHoops.com ($) will stream all four games.

7th/8th Place: UTSA Roadrunners (2-2) vs. James Madison Dukes (1-3), 11 a.m.
5th/6th Place: Bradley Braves (3-1) vs. Weber State Wildcats (3-1), 2 p.m.
3rd/4th Place: Iona Gaels (1-3) vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-2), 5 p.m.
Championship: Vermont Catamounts (2-1) vs. Northern Kentucky Norse (4-0), 8 p.m.

As expected, two 2017 NCAA qualifiers will meet in tonight’s final in Nassau. However, thanks to NKU’s impressive 85-72 victory over Iona on Saturday night, it won’t be the Iona-Vermont matchup many anticipated. The Catamounts also won their semifinal, over Coastal Carolina, by a 13-point margin.

Puerto Rico Tip-Off At Myrtle Beach

7th/8th Place: UTEP Miners (1-2) vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers (2-2), 11:30 a.m. (ESPN3)
5th/6th Place: South Carolina Gamecocks (3-1) vs. Western Michigan Broncos (2-2), approx. 2 p.m. (ESPNU)
3rd/4th Place: Illinois State Redbirds (1-2) vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2-2), 5 p.m. (ESPNU)
Championship: Boise State Broncos (4-0) vs. Iowa State Cyclones (2-2), approx. 7:30 p.m. (ESPNU)

With the exception of the seventh-place game, rematches are the theme of the day in Conway, S.C.

  • South Carolina is looking for its second win over WMU in the span of a week—the Gamecocks defeated the Broncos, 78-60, in a non-bracketed game in Columbia on Monday evening.
  • This will be the second season in a row featuring two Illinois State and Tulsa games, with one of those contests coming in an ESPN Events tournament. In December 2016, the Redbirds lost at the Reynolds Center, 70-68, before winning the rematch in the Diamond Head Classic’s third-place game, 68-56. This season, the Golden Hurricane visit Normal, Ill. on December 2nd.
  • This will be the second Iowa State-Boise State meeting for the championship of an ESPN-owned tournament. The Cyclones edged the Broncos, 70-66, in the final of the 2013 Diamond Head Classic.

U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam

FloHoops.com ($) will stream all four games.

7th/8th Place: Quinnipiac Bobcats (1-3) at Liberty Flames (2-2), 12 p.m.
4th/6th Place: Houston Cougars (2-1) vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (1-3), approx. 2:30 p.m.
3rd/5th Place: Drexel Dragons (2-2) vs. Drake Bulldogs (2-1), 6 p.m.
Championship: Mercer Bears (4-1) vs. Colorado Buffaloes (4-0) , 8:30 p.m.

The host Flames fell two points short of earning a chance to defeat Wake Forest for the second time in a week. Instead, Liberty will take on Quinnipiac, whose hard luck arrived in a 70-69 quarterfinal loss to Colorado, in an attempt to avoid an 0-3 finish.

Mercer, which lost to Akron in the Savannah Invitational championship game last November, will look to do one better this season, though the Buffaloes will present a significant challenge—even if they struggled to defeat both Quinnipiac and Drake in Lynchburg.

In the third-place game, Drake and Drexel will finally meet up after avoiding each other in the 2011 edition of this event, 2012 Anaheim Classic, and 2016 Great Alaska Shootout.

Hall of Fame Tip-Off

Naismith Bracket

Consolation: Boston College Eagles (3-1) vs. La Salle Explorers (3-0), approx. 3 p.m. (ESPN2)
Championship: Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0) vs. Northwestern Wildcats (3-1), approx. 5:30 p.m. (ESPN2)

Northwestern is looking to win its first tournament title since the 2012-13 season—when the Wildcats defeated TCU and Illinois State to win the now-departed South Padre Island Invitational. Texas Tech hasn’t won one in the KenPom era.

Springfield Bracket

Consolation: Maine Black Bears (0-3) vs. Sacred Heart Pioneers (0-3), 12:30 p.m. (ESPN3)
Championship: South Alabama Jaguars (2-2) vs. Saint Peter’s Peacocks (1-2), approx. 8 p.m. (ESPN3)

The Jaguars and Peacocks picked up their first Division I victories of the season, and the CollegeInsider.com Tournament champs from New Jersey will be favored to double that total tonight. Meanwhile, just one the two teams meeting in the first game of the day in Uncasville, Conn. will be able to remove the goose egg from its win column.

Gildan Charleston Classic

7th/8th Place: Indiana State Sycamores (1-2) vs. Ohio Bobcats (1-2), 1 p.m. (ESPN3)
5th/6th Place: Old Dominion Monarchs (3-1), vs. Dayton Flyers (2-1), approx. 3:30 p.m. (ESPN3)
3rd/4th Place: Auburn Tigers (2-1) vs. Hofstra Pride (3-1), 7 p.m. (ESPNU)
Championship: Temple Owls (2-0) vs. Clemson Tigers (4-0), approx. 9:30 p.m. (ESPN2)

The Tigers are looking for their third consecutive victory over the Owls in this event. In the 2008 championship game, the inaugural one, Clemson took down Temple, 76-72. Five years later, Brad Brownell’s squad knocked Fran Dunphy’s team into the consolation bracket with a 72-58 quarterfinal victory.

In the consolation games, I’m most looking forward to some good-natured Twitter sniping. For the third-place game, follow @LonelyTailgater (representing Auburn) and @JerryBeach73 and @gmoore21566 (on the Hofstra side). In the fifth-place contest, it’s ODU’s @devyanks90 (who’s on site) and Dayton’s @juliaflyer.

2K Classic Benefitting Wounded Warrior Project Subregional

Championship: Seattle Redhawks (2-2) at Belmont Bruins (3-1), 2 p.m. (OVC Digital Network)
Consolation: Detroit Mercy Titans (1-2) vs. Houston Baptist Huskies (1-2), approx. 4:30 p.m. (no broadcast)

Despite owning a 16-point lead at halftime, the host Bruins very nearly ended up in the consolation game, thanks to allowing a furious Husky rally in the second half. Still, Rick Byrd’s squad is still a heavy favorite to win the title, as Seattle only claimed its first D1 win yesterday over Detroit.

Jamaica Classic Montego Bay

Hosts Showcase’

Colorado State Rams (2-1) vs. Florida State Seminoles (2-0), 5 p.m. (CBSSN)
Tulane Green Wave (3-0) vs. Fordham Rams (1-2), approx. 7:30 p.m. (CBSSN)

Both sets of Rams will have to do far better than they did on Friday to avoid 0-2 trips to the Caribbean. Tulane opened its Friday game against Colorado State with a 17-2 run and never looked back—defeating a team expected to contend in the Mountain West by 27, 80-53. While Fordham is again expected to finish near the A 10 basement, Florida State’s 67-43 victory over the Bronx Rams on Friday evening was no less impressive.

Visitors’ Round-Robin

Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (3-0) vs. Hartford Hawks (2-2), approx. 10 p.m. (CBSSN)

Last night, the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds earned a split of their two games in Jamaica by defeating the Hawks, 86-84. Tonight, the RedHawks look to complete a perfect trip to Montego Bay knocking off Hartford.
