On The Menu: New Year's Day Hoops

A quartet of Pac-12 openers highlight the first day of 2016's limited slate. The Mountain schools are in the Bay Area this weekend, while the L.A. schools traveled up to the Evergreen State. The Oregon and Arizona schools start league play Sunday against their respective in-state rivals.

Pac-12 Opening Night

No. 21 Utah Utes (11-2) at Stanford Cardinal (7-4), 9 p.m. (ESPNU)
USC Trojans (11-2) at Washington State Cougars (8-4), 9 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks National, L.A., and Washington)
No. 25 UCLA Bruins (9-4) at Washington Huskies (8-4), 11 p.m. (FS1)
Colorado Buffaloes (11-2) at California Golden Bears (10-3), 11 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks National, Mountain, and Bay Area)

In the 6 p.m. Pacific tips, look for the Cardinal—especially tough to defeat at Maples—to give the Utes a fight, while the Trojans need to avoid a potential trap game (and bad loss from a selection perspective) in Pullman. It's a similar situation for the Bruins in the 8 p.m. Pacific window—the host Huskies fell to UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in their final non-conference game on Monday night. Meanwhile, in Berkeley, the Buffaloes could use a quality road win, as their 11 non-league triumphs lack a positive result against a team that's in the at-large picture. They'll have a difficult time grabbing one against a young, but rapidly improving Golden Bear squad.
