College Hoops Viewing Guide: January 24 & 25, 2014

Saturday's 138-game Division I schedule is highlighted by an in-state battle for first place in the Big Ten, a pair of intriguing afternoon Big 12 matchups, and an SEC contest which will see someone's streak come to an end.

Friday Night

Rider Broncs (9-8, 5-3 MAAC) at Manhattan Jaspers (13-4, 6-2), 7 p.m. (ESPNU)
Lipscomb Bisons (7-12, 2-6 A-Sun) at Northern Kentucky Norse (8-12, 4-4), 7 p.m. (CSS*/ESPN3)
Quinnipiac Bobcats (11-6, 6-2 MAAC) at Iona Gaels (9-8, 6-2), 7 p.m. (ESPN3)
Detroit Titans (8-12, 1-4 Horizon) at Milwaukee Panthers (13-8, 3-4), 8 p.m. (Horizon League Network
Vermont Catamounts (11-8, 5-0 AE) at Stony Brook Seawolves (13-6, 5-0), 9 p.m. (ESPNU)

Tonight's limited slate is highlighted by a matchup of league unbeatens in the America East and a pair of games in the Metro Atlantic, featuring the four teams closest to leader Canisius (7-2).

Saturday Late Morning/Early Afternoon

Marquee Games

Florida State Seminoles (13-5, 4-2 ACC) at Duke Blue Devils (15-4, 4-2), 12 p.m. (ESPN)

Two of the three squads tied for fourth in the ACC (Clemson is the other) square off in Durham, where the Seminoles will try to repeat their stunning win from two seasons ago.

VCU Rams (15-4, 3-1 A10) at La Salle Explorers (11-7, 3-1), 12 p.m. (ESPN2)

The Rams will look to pick up a second big road win in the span of 72-hours as they visit an Explorer team that was pounded by St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night.

Xavier Musketeers (15-4, 5-1 Big East) at Providence Friars (14-5, 4-2), 12 p.m. (FS1)

The Friars can pick up a third straight home win. If they do, they'll likely join the Musketeers in a tie for third place.

Syracuse Orange (18-0, 5-0 ACC) at Miami Hurricanes (10-8, 2-4), 1 p.m. (CBS)

In the Orange's first ever ACC game, the Hurricanes gave them a scare at the Carrier Dome. While Syracuse has yet to lose this season, they've looked a bit shaky at times on their early conference road trips.

Other Viewing Options

Ohio Bobcats (13-5, 3-2 MAC) at Eastern Michigan Eagles (11-7, 3-2), 11 a.m. (ESPNU) `
George Washington Colonials (15-3, 3-1 A10) at George Mason Patriots (7-10, 0-5), 12 p.m. (NBCSN)
Iowa Hawkeyes (15-4, 4-2 Big Ten) at Northwestern Wildcats (10-10, 3-4), 12 p.m. (BTN)
Towson Tigers (12-7, 3-1 CAA) at Delaware Blue Hens (13-7, 5-0), 12 p.m. (CSN*)
Sacred Heart Pioneers (4-16, 1-4 NEC) at St. Francis, Pa. Red Flash (3-15, 1-4), 12 p.m. (CSN New England/ROOT Sports Pittsburgh/FCS Pacific/ESPN3)
Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (12-9, 6-2 A-Sun) at Kennesaw State Owls (4-17, 1-7), 12 p.m. (ESPN3)
Vanderbilt Commodores (9-8, 1-4 SEC) at Texas A&M Aggies (12-6, 3-2), 1 p.m. (ESPNU)

The winner between Ohio and Eastern Michigan will remain a game back of Akron and Toledo in the MAC race. In the CAA, Delaware hosts its biggest challenger, preseason favorite Towson. Meanwhile, over in the Big Ten, Northwestern will attempt to grab its biggest surprise win to date, as Iowa visits less than 72 hours after falling at Michigan.

Mid-Afternoon Window

Marquee Games

Georgia Bulldogs (10-7, 4-1 SEC) at Kentucky Wildcats (14-4, 4-1), 1:30 p.m. (SEC TV*/ESPN3)

Mark Fox's Bulldogs currently sit in a three-way tie for second in the SEC with the Wildcats and Ole Miss. It would be one of the season's biggest surprises if they remain with one SEC loss after their trip to Rupp.

Kansas State Wildcats (14-5, 4-2 Big 12) at Iowa State Cyclones (14-3, 2-3), 1:30 p.m. (Big 12 Network Regional*/ESPN3)
Texas Longhorns (15-4, 4-2 Big 12) at Baylor Bears (13-5, 1-4), 1:30 p.m. (Big 12 Network Regional*/ESPN3)

The Cyclones and Bears will look to end three-game skids against opponents who are currently surging. A loss for Iowa State would almost assuredly knock them from the protected seed group in Tuesday's bracket.

Villanova Wildcats (16-2, 5-1 Big East) at Marquette Golden Eagles (11-8, 3-3), 2 p.m. (FS1)

Last time out, the Wildcats were felled by a barrage of Creighton threes. A Golden Eagle squad that struggles from beyond the arc shouldn't put on a repeat performance.

Other Viewing Options

West Virginia Mountaineers (11-8, 3-3 Big 12) at Oklahoma State Cowboys (15-3, 3-2), 2 p.m. (ESPN2)
Boston U. Terriers (13-7, 6-1 Patriot) at Bucknell Bison (9-9, 4-3), 2 p.m. (CBS SN)
Charleston Cougars (11-9, 3-2 CAA) at James Madison Dukes (6-13, 1-4), 2 p.m. (CSN*)
UIC Flames (5-15, 0-6 Horizon) at Oakland Golden Grizzlies (7-14, 2-4), 2 p.m. (Horizon League Network/ESPN3)
Valparaiso Crusaders (12-9, 4-2 Horizon) at Cleveland St. Vikings (12-9, 4-3), 2 p.m. (Horizon League Network
North Florida Ospreys (11-10, 5-3 A-Sun) at USC Upstate Spartans (10-10, 3-4), 2 p.m. (ESPN3)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-8, 2-4 ACC) at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (13-6, 3-3), 3 p.m. (ACC Network Regional*/ESPN3)
Virginia Tech Hokies (8-10, 1-5 ACC) at Virginia Cavaliers (14-5, 5-1), 3 p.m. (ACC Network Regional*/ESPN3)

The most interesting game out of this group is Notre Dame's trip to Winston-Salem to take on Wake -- a potential tiebreaker matchup, as both squads are currently on the fringe of the bubble picture.

Saturday Late Afternoon Window

Marquee Games

Tennessee Volunteers (12-6, 3-2 SEC) at Florida Gators (16-2, 5-0), 4 p.m. (ESPN)

I'll be in Gainesville for this one, where each team has a streak or two at stake. The Vols have defeated the Gators three consecutive times, while Florida owns a 10-game winning streak overall and a 25-game unbeaten run at the O'Connell Center. Tennessee's bigs will provide the Gator frontcourt with some issues, especially with freshman Chris Walker still not cleared by the NCAA.

St. Joseph's Hawks (13-5, 3-1 A10) at Richmond Spiders (13-6, 3-1), 4 p.m. (NBCSN)

The Spiders will attempt to close out a three-game homestand with a big win and improved position in the Atlantic 10 race.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (13-5, 3-2 SEC) at Mississippi Rebels (13-5, 4-1), 4 p.m. (SEC TV Regional*/ESPN3)

The Bulldogs can complete a season sweep of the Rebels with a win in Oxford; however, Marshall Henderson will be in action this afternoon. That wasn't the case in Starkville two weeks ago.

Wisconsin Badgers (16-3, 3-3 Big Ten) at Purdue Boilermakers (13-6, 3-3), 5 p.m. (BTN)

The Badgers couldn't possibly drop their fourth in a row to a Boilermaker team that lost at Northwestern on Tuesday night, could they? Well, they did lose to an Indiana team that fell to the Wildcats days later. While the transitive property may be meaningless, Wisconsin's current struggles are not.

Pittsburgh Panthers (17-2, 5-1 ACC) at Maryland Terrapins (11-8, 3-3), 6 p.m. (ESPN2)

Three losses in four games means even an unexpected win over a ruthless, efficient Pitt squad won't be enough to get the Terrapins back into the picture, at least not for the moment.

Other Viewing Options

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (12-7, 4-2 Sun Belt) at Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (12-7, 3-3), 4 p.m. (ESPN2)
St. John's Red Storm (11-8, 1-5 Big East) at Butler Bulldogs (11-8, 1-6), 4 p.m. (FSN*)
Dayton Flyers (13-6, 1-3 A10) at Rhode Island Rams (10-10, 1-4), 4 p.m. (CBS SN)
Oklahoma Sooners (15-4, 4-2 Big 12) at Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-9, 2-4), 4 p.m. (Big 12 Network*/ESPN3)
South Carolina Gamecocks (7-11, 0-5 SEC) at Missouri Tigers (14-4, 2-3), 4 p.m. (SEC TV Regional*/ESPN3)
UTSA Roadrunners (6-11, 2-2 C-USA) at UTEP Miners (13-6, 3-1), 4 p.m. (CSS*)
Northern Iowa Panthers (10-9, 4-3 MVC) at Loyola of Chicago Ramblers (7-12, 2-5), 4 p.m. (CSN Chicago/ESPN3)
New Mexico Lobos (14-4, 5-1 MW) at Colorado State Rams (12-7, 3-3), 4 p.m. (ESPN3)
VMI Keydets (10-8, 3-2 Big South) at Winthrop Eagles (9-8, 3-2), 4 p.m. (ESPN3)
Sam Houston St. Bearkats (13-6, 5-2 Southland) at Abilene Christian Wildcats (7-12, 1-4), 4 p.m. (ESPN3)
Nevada Wolf Pack (10-9, 5-1 MW) at Wyoming Cowboys (12-6, 3-2), 4 p.m. (MWN, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mountain West Connection)
American U. Eagles (11-7, 7-0 Patriot) at Army Black Knights (10-6, 6-1), 4 p.m. (Patriot League Network, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)
San Diego Toreros (11-10, 2-6 WCC) at Portland Pilots (12-8, 4-4), 4 p.m. (TheW.tv, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)
Northwestern State Demons (6-11, 2-4 Southland) at Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (10-9, 4-2), 4:30 p.m. (KGEB/FCS Atlantic)
Oregon State Beavers (11-7, 3-3 Pac-12) at Washington Huskies (12-8, 4-3), 5 p.m. (Pac-12 Network)
North Dakota State Bison (14-5, 3-1 Summit) at South Dakota State Jackrabbits (10-9, 2-2), 5 p.m. (Midco SN/FCS Central)
DePaul Blue Demons (10-10, 2-5 Big East) at Seton Hall Pirates (11-8, 2-4), 6 p.m. (CBS SN)
Auburn Tigers (8-8, 0-5 SEC) at Arkansas Razorbacks (12-6, 1-4), 6 p.m. (SEC on FSN*/ESPN3)
San Jose State Spartans (6-13, 0-7 MW) at Boise State Broncos (13-6, 3-1), 6 p.m. (ROOT Sports*/MWN, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mountain West Connection)
FAU Owls (7-12, 2-2 C-USA) at FIU Panthers (10-9, 2-2), 6 p.m. (CSS/CSN*)
Loyola Marymount Lions (11-0, 3-6 WCC) at St. Mary's Gaels (15-5, 5-2), 6 p.m. (TheW.tv, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)
Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (7-9, 3-2) at Bowling Green Falcons (9-9, 3-2), 6 p.m. (TWCS*/ESPN3)

There are plenty of other intriguing matchups to spend some time with in the late afternoon. Dayton may struggle to get back on track in the A10, thanks to a tricky trip to Rhode Island. In the Big 12, Oklahoma -- who almost fell to TCU at home on Wednesday -- visits a Texas Tech squad that's already knocked off Baylor in Lubbock. New Mexico can stay a game behind San Diego State in the Mountain West race with a win at Moby Arena. In the Patriot League, leaders American, who thrashed Boston U. on Wednesday night, visit an Army team that surprisingly sits just a game behind the Eagles in the standings.

Saturday Evening Windows

Marquee Games

Michigan Wolverines (14-4, 6-0 Big Ten) at Michigan State Spartans (18-1, 7-0), 7 p.m. (ESPN)

The hosts will be challenged to hold on to first-place in the Big Ten (and perhaps even a No. 1 seed on Tuesday), as the surging Wolverines are head into town on a night when the Spartans will surely be without Branden Dawson (hand) and likely Adreian Payne (foot) too.

Colorado Buffaloes (15-5, 4-3 Pac-12) at Arizona State Sun Devils (14-5, 3-3), 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Network)

On Thursday, the Sun Devils struggled with Utah, while the Buffs were routed in Tucson. Given Colorado's injury problems and ASU's lack of quality wins, both could use a victory in Tempe.

Georgetown Hoyas (11-7, 3-4 Big East) at Creighton Bluejays (16-3, 6-1), 8 p.m. (FS1)

A Hoya team that's dropped three in a row, two at home, hits the road, in search of a remedy for its recent struggles. Omaha, home of the explosive Bluejay offense, will probably not be the source of that solution.

Kansas Jayhawks (14-4, 5-0 Big 12) at TCU Horned Frogs (9-9, 0-6), 9 p.m. (ESPNU)

Last season, the Jayhawks lost in Fort Worth. Don't expect a repeat, especially since the 2013 loss fell smack in the middle of a three-game losing streak for KU.

BYU Cougars (13-8, 5-3 WCC) at Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-3, 7-1), 10 p.m. (ESPN2)

Thanks to the Cougars' triple OT loss at Portland on Thursday, this one has lost a bit of its luster. Still, a win at the Kennel would keep BYU in the bubble conversation, at least until the next WCC defeat occurs.

Other Viewing Options

Connecticut Huskies (15-4, 3-3 AAC) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-11, 2-4), 7 p.m. (ESPNU)
UNC Greensboro Spartans (10-11, 3-3 SoCon) at Chattanooga Mocs (13-8, 7-0), 7 p.m. (ESPN3)
Wright State Raiders (13-9, 5-2 Horizon) at Youngstown State Penguins (12-9, 3-3), 7 p.m. (Horizon League Network
Presbyterian Blue Hose (4-16, 0-5 Big South) at Liberty Flames (8-12, 3-3), 7 p.m. (Flames Sports Network/MASN/ESPN3
Lafayette Leopards (4-14, 0-7 Patriot) at Lehigh Mountain Hawks (9-11, 2-5), 7 p.m. (Patriot League Network, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)

Holy Cross Crusaders (10-9, 4-3 Patriot) at Navy Midshipmen (7-11, 2-5), 7 p.m. (Patriot League Network, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)
Colgate Raiders (7-11, 1-4 Patriot) at Loyola, Md. Greyhounds (8-10, 3-4), 7 p.m. (Patriot League Network, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)
LSU Tigers (12-5, 3-2 SEC) at Alabama Crimson Tide (8-10, 2-3), 8 p.m. (ESPN2)
Marshall Thundering Herd (7-13, 1-4 C-USA) at Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (16-4, 4-1), 8 p.m. (CBS SN)
Southern Illinois Salukis (6-14, 2-5 MVC) at Missouri State Bears (13-6, 3-4), 8 p.m. (FS Midwest/ESPN3)
Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (10-11, 3-3 OVC) at Austin Peay Governors (8-12, 2-4), 8 p.m. (CSS)
Santa Clara Broncos (10-11, 3-5 WCC) at San Francisco Dons (12-8, 5-3), 8 p.m. (CSN Bay Area/ROOT Sports Northwest/TWCS/TheW.tv, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)
UTPA Broncos (6-14, 2-3 WAC) at New Mexico State Aggies (14-7, 3-2), 9 p.m. (AggieVision*/ESPN3)
Fresno State Bulldogs (8-12, 1-6 MW) at UNLV Runnin' Rebels (12-7, 3-3), 10 p.m. (CBS SN)
Pepperdine Waves (12-9, 5-4 WCC) at Pacific Tigers (10-8, 1-6), 10 p.m. (TheW.tv, streaming directly at SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness)
Hawai `i Rainbow Warriors (13-5, 2-2 Big West) at UC Irvine Anteaters (13-7, 4-0), 10 p.m. (ESPN3)
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (12-5, 3-1 Big West) at Cal State Fullerton Titans (6-12, 1-3), 10:30 p.m. (FS Prime Ticket San Diego)
San Diego State Aztecs (17-1, 6-0 MW) at Utah State Aggies (12-6, 2-4), 11 p.m. (ESPNU)

During the evening hours, both San Diego State and Chattanooga will attempt to keep their perfect conference records intact, UConn should be able to get above .500 in the AAC, and LSU and Alabama will square off in a game with serious NIT implications.
