Piecing Together The South Padre Field And More NIT Season Tip-Off Info

Information on early season events is still trickling in, at least until the May-June flood of field announcements happens.

The South Padre Invitational, one of Basketball Tournaments, Inc.'s four hybrid tournaments, is taking shape, as two NCAA teams and two NIT participants are lined up as host schools.

Texas Tech will serve as one of the host schools, as will BYU. Jim Rayburn's Deseret News post lists St. Mary's as another participating team. (They surely wouldn't stick them in the mid-major bracket after a Sweet Sixteen run). Finally, the Lynchburg News & Advance reports that Liberty will be visiting the Red Raiders and South Florida, as part of the event.

Based on these reports, the South Padre field looks like this for the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, with early games played at the major schools.

Major Bracket: BYU, Saint Mary's, South Florida, Texas Tech
Mid-Major Bracket: Georgia Southern, Liberty, 2 TBD

Rayburn also links to a story out of Glens Falls, New York, stating that BYU will play Vermont there on December 9, giving Jimmer Fredette a homecoming game if he returns to school.

In NIT Season Tip-Off news, near the end of this blog post by the Reno Gazette-Journal's Chris Murray is the news that Nevada will play in UCLA's regional, alongside Pacific and Pepperdine. That means two of the four regionals are set, as Villanova will host a pod featuring Boston University, George Washington, and Marist. Tennessee is the third regional host, while the fourth has yet to be announced.
