Bracketology 2024: College Basketball Coast To Coast Recap Show And My Performance

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

I saved my many, many criticisms of the 2024 version of the Selection Committee for my chat with T.J. and Ari, so please listen.

Before getting to the show, a quick recap of my performance:

1 at-large miss (Oklahoma out, Virginia in)

39 teams seeded exactly (improvement of 1 from 2023, but still 6 lower than in 2022)

15 seeded within 1 line (drop from 24 in 2023 and 21 in 2022)

11 seeded within 2 lines (rise from 4 in 2023 and 1 in 2022)

2 seeded within 3 lines (rise from 1 in 2023 and 0 in 2022)

My biggest misses were BYU (6, projected 4), Florida (7, projected 5), almost the entire Mountain West (only San Diego State’s seeding matched my projection, everyone else was at least 2 seeds lower, with Boise State and Nevada 3 lines lower), and any sort of name brand—who inevitably ended up seeded higher than expected (other than Duke and Kentucky, who flipped)—Gonzaga, Michigan State, Texas, and Texas A&M.

It really seemed like the Committee didn’t take bad losses into account as much as in the past—that’s a good thing on balance, but unexpected nonetheless.

Now to the show:

This was truly a loaded program at almost two hours, covering all of the bases.

First, Ari Russell and I joined T.J. Rives to cover what the selection committee got right and wrong (you know how I feel), especially with some teams seeded times by brand name/popularity in March vs. an actual earned ranking. I also shared my thoughts on the toughest region and a possible Final Four team from that region. I didn’t say much about the Big East’s three bids because Ari covered that, as he was at the Big East Tournament, along with Adam Zagoria of NJ.com and Zagsblog.com. Besides their reaction to the league’s low bid total, they shared their thoughts on UConn’s title and their place as the overall No. 1 seed in the bracket.

Then, you’ll hear from old friend Matt Zemek of Trojanswire.com with more on the West, including Oregon stealing a bid in the final Pac12 by beating Arizona and Colorado. He also has some comments on the Mountain West’s bid total and seeding.

Next, Tyler Jones of the “Jones Report” show/podcast and Chat Sports is aboard from the Southwest, talking Big 12 and being at the American Athletic Conference tourney in Ft. Worth, which UAB won.

Jason Powers of the “Powers on Sports Podcast” is back from Vegas after joining T.J. at the Mountain West Tournament. He thinks all of the Alabama teams got jobbed by having to go all the way out to Spokane, Washington (I also discussed this in my segment.), and he shares his upset picks.

Finally, the guys are joined by DeShaun Tate of 92.9 FM “The Game” in Atlanta and Tate’s Take the Podcast to talk about the ACC’s selection, bracket gifts and snubs, possible upsets, and more.

UAB took care of Temple in the American final and Yale escaped Brown at the buzzer to end Ivy Madness. That means this bracket looks very similar to this morning’s.
22 single-bid conferences

I did my number crunching and final analysis (other than shifting the bottom four seed lines depending on the Ivy, Atlantic 10, and American title games). Over the last few days, I’ve been digging into the numbers of my biggest misses over the past couple of seasons to use that information in this year’s projection, which is why you’ll see some shifts compared to last night. That post will give you a good rundown of why we are where we are.

The teams that should be worried the most are Michigan State (no bad losses, but 9-14 in Quad 1 and 2 games), Texas A&M (still, since they’re 13-10 in Quad 1 and 2 games, but 7-4 in Quad 3 and 4 contests), TCU (352nd of 362 in non-conference scheduling, but no bad losses), and Colorado (10-10 in Quad 1 and 2 games, but only four wins over teams in the field: a regular season sweep of Oregon, a home win over Washington State, and a home win over Grambling).

On the other hand, I would not be surprised if one of the Big East teams snuck in or if Virginia got in because of its 10-10 record in Quad 1 and 2 games (with no bad losses), even if the Cavaliers’ inability to score is beyond painful at this point.

Sunday’s Schedule

All times are Eastern.

Ivy Championship: Brown vs. Yale, 12 p.m. (ESPN2)
The Bears are on a seven-game win streak, including an 84-81 overtime win over the Bulldogs in New Haven back on March 9th. I currently have Yale as a 13, but Brown would end up on line 16 and might spare Howard the trip to Dayton.

Atlantic 10 Championship: Duquesne vs. VCU, 1 p.m. (CBS)
The Rams can clinch a second consecutive bid, while the Dukes last qualified in 1977. VCU is slotted on line 12 (but are not an at-large candidate). Duquesne would likely replace the Rams in that spot with a win.

SEC Championship: Florida vs. Auburn, 1 p.m. (ESPN)
The Tigers were promoted to the 3 line, while the Gators moved up to a 5. I wouldn’t expect that to change no matter what happens because these Sunday afternoon power-conference finals rarely move the needle for the Committee, if ever.

American Championship: Temple vs. UAB, 3:15 (ESPN)
Currently, the Blazers are slotted as a 13, but at 15-19 against Division I opponents, the Owls are a possible 16 seed with a win.

Big Ten Championship: Wisconsin vs. Illinois, 3:30 (CBS)
It’s a similar story in Minneapolis for the Fighting Illini (a 3 currently) and Badgers (a 5). I wouldn’t expect much of a change with this very late tip.

There will be one last bracket projection, right before the Selection Show.

Oregon and NC State popped two teams’ bubbles tonight. I have a preliminary idea of whom, but will look through résumés again in the morning.

Top Line And Cut Line Breakdown (Updated at 6:30 p.m. Eastern)

Teams in bold are in action today. Changes are in ALL CAPS.

Current No. 1 seeds: CONNECTICUT (won), PURDUE (lost), HOUSTON (lost), North Carolina (lost)
Current No. 2 seeds: Tennessee, Iowa State (won), Arizona, Marquette (lost)

Last 4 Byes: NORTHWESTERN, MICHIGAN STATE, TEXAS, FLORIDA ATLANTIC (lost)
Last 4 In: TEXAS A&M (lost), OKLAHOMA, TCU, COLORADO (lost)
First 4 Out: ST. JOHN’S, SETON HALL, VIRGINIA, INDIANA STATE
Next 4 Out: PROVIDENCE, PITTSBURGH, WAKE FOREST, OHIO STATE

With South Florida’s semifinal loss to UAB, the American dropped down to one bid. But then FAU fell to Temple, knocking the Boca Owls back into the at-large pool. FAU and Northwestern are back in the “Last Four Byes,” after New Mexico was promoted out of the Dayton quartet by winning the Mountain West title. Meanwhile, Seton Hall returns to the “First Four Out” following its short cameo in the field. Virginia and St. John’s joined the Pirates after NC State and Oregon took the ACC and Pac-12 auto bids, while Michigan State drops into the “Last Four Byes” and A&M joins a “Last Four In” group that might as well be an SEC/Big 12 Challenge (at least looking at future alignment).

On the top line, UConn all but sealed the No. 1 overall seed by defeating Marquette in the Big East final, while Purdue jumped Houston after the Cougars got run out of Kansas City by Iowa State. North Carolina remains on the top line despite its loss to the Wolfpack.
