Belmont is the only NCAA Tournament team in the 2012 field, while Oral Roberts is the lone of the seven Division I teams that made the NIT. Of the other five, just Loyola Marymount closed the 2011-12 campaign with a winning record. Once again, Alaska-Anchorage was unable to secure a Power Six conference team for its tournament, with UC Riverside, Charlotte, Northeastern, and Texas State rounding out the field.
Per Pacific's release about its participation in the Anaheim Classic of all places. The Minutemen's inclusion would keep an A-10 team in the field after Xavier's move to the Southern California event.
Amy K. Nelson heads to San Francisco to uncover if it's possible to predict the perfect bracket. Beer, brackets and the next great nerd?
New Orleans is NOT leaving for DII anymore. Perhaps they will return to the Sun Belt soon? This is the second piece of realignment news (if we can call this realignment related) after the Temple to Big East news broke earlier this week.
Plenty of changes from last week, and from the first actual bracket of the season, which I released just four weeks ago.
Syracuse, Kentucky, Baylor, and UNC are the top seeds, while the First Four has a C-USA look to it. I'll be posting updates each Monday on SBNation between now and Selection Sunday, with some sort of weekly bubble post starting later this month. As always, updates will become more frequent as the season moves towards its conclusion.
The Aztecs will be moving in time for the 2013-14 academic year when the football program will be heading to the Big East.
The Norse, 1996 and 1997 NCAA Division II runners-up, are leaving the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Their arrival in the Atlantic Sun for the 2012-13 academic year will help fill the void left by Belmont's departure for the Ohio Valley Conference. Curiously, the OVC was Northern Kentucky's first conference choice; however, the league rejected them out of fear that the Norse "would be too powerful for other Ohio Valley Conference members," according to Cincinnati.com. NKU will have to go through the typical Division I transition, which means they won't actually be eligible for a berth in the NCAA Tournament until the 2016-17 season.
For basketball purposes, Houston, SMU, and UCF are poor replacements for Pitt, Syracuse, and West Virginia, but you and I know that's not what this is about. Boise State and San Diego State are set to come aboard for football only. The Aztecs are likely to join the Big West in other sports, which refreshingly makes geographic sense, even if such a move is a competitive step down. There's no word yet on where the Broncos would park their other sports. Air Force is also a possible addition, though they have the same conference issue as Boise. Navy, which has no such issues thanks to its place in the Patriot League, could also join. More info and analysis when things become official, as there are sure to be more dominoes falling. Be sure to check out Mountain West Connection's take on this too.
You don't need to be a Syracuse fan to enjoy this one, as Nick Fasulo catches up with the former Orange guard who is the namesake of his blog. Read and enjoy.
