Saturday Bracketology: Duke Jumps To The Top Line

This bracket is cross-posted at SB Nation.

As Selection Sunday is now a little more than two weeks away, it's time to start putting out brackets a bit more frequently. My next projection will come Monday, and I'll continue on the Saturday/Monday schedule for one more week.

During Championship Week, I'll post a new bracket on Tuesday and Wednesday if necessary to reflect conference title games. Starting Thursday, I'll go daily (or more frequently, if events warrant) until I post my final projection at around 5 p.m. ET on Selection Sunday.

As for this bracket, there are two big changes. Duke replaces Purdue on the top line for the moment. If the Boilermakers can beat Michigan State without Robbie Hummel (Sunday, 4 p.m. ET, CBS) they'll move back up, provided Villanova doesn't stun Syracuse at the Carrier Dome (Saturday, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN) later in the evening.

The other change is that San Diego State is out after their loss to BYU Wednesday. The Aztecs are the first team out, certainly not dead, but they need to make some noise at the Mountain West Tournament to get back. Charlotte replaces them, though at this point, I could have drawn any one of four names from a hat to fill that final spot.

It's a safe bet that a completely different team will be the final at-large on Monday.

New Mexico out West

Is that because of their RPI? Also couldnt both New Mexico and BYU be out West if they did not meet until the Regional final? If UNM is a 3 and BYU a 4 they would not meet until the elite 8?

The first three teams from a conference...

must be in different regions. UNM gets the West because of a better overall profile, and now that big win in Provo.. BYU has to go East because it’s the only other Thursday/Saturday regional.

I know this came out before the UK game

But I feel like you’ve been a little pessimistic about Tennessee in the last couple brackets. 20-7 (8-5) with a win over the #1 team and two of the losses coming away from home against top 5 opponents seems like it at least deserves a 6 or 7. It’s actually very similar to (or slightly better than) their 22-10 (10-7) record three years ago that merited a 5 seed. I know the SEC is still likely to only get 4 bids, but SEC wins are still much more valuable this year than last year, in which a 21-12 (12-7) year in the SEC actually warranted a 9.

The A-10 will not get five teams in. Either rhode island or charlotte will not make it.

it would be nice for the committee to give the mid majors it’s due. the way you have it worked out this would be the most non bcs conference(espn sometimes refers to this) teams that ever made the tourney.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. I was building a house, I don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. Bang. "Unforgiven" I drink your milkshake. I drink it up! "There Will BE Blood"
