A question from a naive newcomer.

So in searching through the blogs on SB Nation, I came across "Blogging the Bracket", a blog devoted to College Basketball.  Once I saw this, I thought to myself, " I need to be a part of this."  And here we are.  I really appreciate the coverage this blog gives to all teams with a chance to make it to the field of 64.

But enough brown nosing, it's time to get to the point.  This topic has probably bean beaten to death, and I haven't looked through the site enough, but I have a question.  Are "The Calipari Years" in Kentucky going to be as dominant as I suspect?  I mean, he's turning in one of the best recruiting classes in the nation in the span of about a month or two.  When he has a couple tourney appearances under his belt there, can they be stopped?... Maybe I'm just clueless, but this seems somewhat interesting to me.  Thank you for your time.

I apologize for the lateness of my reply...

I’m still working on a lot of proposals on my day job, which has cut down on my time to do serious blogging. But I have a little bit of a break tonight to talk hoops.

I really don’t think the Calipari era will mean that UK completely dominates the SEC like Memphis dominated C-USA, simply because the depth of the conference is so much better. Billy Donovan at my alma mater has two national championships and another Final Four appearance, which stands for something even if the team has been a bit down the past two years. Bruce Pearl will continue to keep Tennessee in a good position. Darrin Horn and Kevin Stallings will keep their schools in the mix more often than not. And I haven’t even discussed the West, which is due to stop being full of underachievers.

In short, the thing Calipari will have to contend with the most in his new league is that he’s competing against the some of the best coaches in the country, many of whom have access to facilities that are the equal to or better than UK’s. (UT’s arena is bigger, UF’s practice facility is newer.) In Memphis, he was able to use the combo of an NBA arena, NBA market, and weak conference, along with some good scheduling practices to build a power. He loses some of that advantage in Lexington. Sure the name will carry some cachet, but not as much as it would have 15 years ago.

fair enough...

But it’s hard to argue with the class he is bringing in already, without ever playing a game with the Wildcats. Personally I think that at the very least, Calipari will make ESPN’s contract with the SEC that much better. And possibly even make College Basketball that much more exciting overall.

Even though I am in no way a fan of Calipari, I am excited to see what he can do with such a gigantic basketball powerhouse. Even if all of his wins with UK will be erased in a few years anyway :) ha.
