Final Projection - Storylines to Watch in the Selection Show

I've completed my final projection of this year (seed list, trends).  There are only a few slight changes from my last projection earlier this morning.  These changes reflect some of the main storylines for tonight.

  • Who gets the final one seed?  Connecticut?  Memphis?  Duke?  I ended up moving the Tigers back into the top spot in the West.  The Huskies are the two seed in that region.  I made the decision because Memphis has been a bit more consistent of late, even if it is against inferior opposition.  UConn has been good without Jerome Dyson, but not as great as they had been.
  • Who are the last couple of teams in?  Mississippi State won the SEC title this afternoon after a horrifically officiated final few minutes.  That eliminated San Diego State on my board.  It's very close between the Aztecs, Creighton (who got the nod in my projection), St. Mary's, Arizona, and Penn State for the final spot.

I'll post a quick review of my performance compared to the actual bracket later this evening.

by Tom (RFTN) on Mar 15, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Arguments are constantly over the schedule

small conference teams can’t control who’s in their conference… and it’s not like they can just wake up one day and decide to move to a bigger conference.

And then the OoC schedule… you can only play better teams if they agree… and quite often, they don’t.

Bilas is a fool

He just thinks that the Big East and ACC ARE the tournament.

My theory on why Andy Reid doesn't like running the football.

When Andy Reid was 6, his parents wanted him to lose some weight and always asked him to go to the park and run, Annoyed, Andy said "No I'll pass".

Wisconsin

Slive basically just admitted they’re really an 11 and not a 12 but couldn’t be an 11 because of conflicts (Big Ten teams in the bottom half of three brackets, Marquette as the 6 in the fourth.)

by Tom (RFTN) on Mar 15, 2009 6:56 PM EDT reply actions

Arizona had no right to get in

They had ZERO road conference wins outside of the Oregon schools (and they barely beat Oregon State), and just collapsed down the stretch and did nothing in the Pac-10 tournament to help their case.

Now that I think about it I find it disturbing that the committee must have thought Arizona did enough in the regular season to send them through. Their last game was a win over Stanford, another mediocre Pac-10 team, just to get them to the .500 mark in conference play.

St. Mary’s has a higher RPI than Arizona, a better record, they played 8 straight games on the road and had a winning record in that span, and they’re NIT bound.

That’s a case of getting in on reputation.

My theory on why Andy Reid doesn't like running the football.

When Andy Reid was 6, his parents wanted him to lose some weight and always asked him to go to the park and run, Annoyed, Andy said "No I'll pass".

by SSreporters on Mar 15, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

So St. Mary's should go take care of business in the NIT....

and then maybe in the future they’ll get the benefit of the doubt………Its hard to argue when there are 34 at large selections….not to mention when each team has a chance to win their own conference tourney to get in………….arguing about team 35/66 (however you wanna look at it) is rather pointless.
